JSC recommends impeachment inquiry into former chief justice Mogoeng
Updated | By Bulletin / Jacaranda FM
The Judicial Service Commission's conduct committee has advised an impeachment inquiry into former chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
This follows allegations from impeached Western Cape judge president John Hlophe, claiming Mogoeng “conducted himself improperly and unlawfully in the manner in which he handled the complaint against him” by Deputy Judge President Patricia Goliath.
The SABC reported on Tuesday that Hlophe claims among other things, that the former chief justice had a private conversation with Goliath, in his absence, over the matter and thereafter presided over the same allegations and his subsequent counter-complaint in a manner that was inconsistent with his oath of office.
The committee stated that, if proven, this could amount to dishonesty, tarnishing the judiciary’s reputation.
The JSC’s smaller, non-political group will decide whether the inquiry proceeds.
Mogoeng has denied any wrongdoing.
