Judgement reserved in MK Party election results challenge
The High Court in Johannesburg has reserved judgment in the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s challenge to the 2024 general election results.
The party is seeking to have the outcome set aside, arguing that the results were compromised after the Electoral Commission’s results dashboard went offline for about two hours during the counting process.
The commission has rejected the claims, citing there is no evidence of manipulation and describing the case as an abuse of litigation processes.
The court will now decide the matter at a later stage.
CLAIMS OF VOTE-RIGGING
Nearly two years ago, the party took its grievances about alleged vote-rigging in the 2024 general elections to the Electoral Court.
In the commission’s answering affidavit, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the MK Party had failed to produce any credible evidence to support its claims.
At the time, the party missed the three-day deadline for the submission of grievances and filed its papers nearly two weeks after the election results were announced.
The MK party claimed that over 9.3 million votes were unaccounted for.
