July 2021 unrest trial delayed again over legal representation
The July 2021 unrest trial has been postponed after most of the 62 accused remained without legal representation, delaying proceedings further.
The group returned to the Durban High Court on Monday on what should have been the second week of the trial.
When proceedings began last week, the High Court heard that many of the accused had no legal representation and would need Legal Aid.
On Monday, the court heard that only five applications were granted.
Legal Aid SA said the rest are still without representation due to their applications either being denied or incomplete, as well as outstanding documents and payment disputes.
There was laughter in the courtroom when several accused offered to pay another's Legal Aid contributions, after he said he would represent himself.
After the light moment, Legal Aid South Africa told the court that appeals of application refusals will be heard at the Motion Court in August, further delaying the matter.
The matter was postponed to next month.
