Justice demanded for slain Wits student
There is a growing outcry over the murder of 19-year-old Wits student Asithandile 'Kwasa' Zozo.
The first year student has been stabbed to death in Dutywa in the Eastern Cape, allegedly by an ex-boyfriend who did not want her to leave him.
Deputy Minister for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities Hlengiwe Mkhize says the boyfriend should be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
"It is exactly this kind of perpetrators we do not want back into society. He stabbed Zozo to death for rejecting him, and took her life.
"We call upon men and men formations to intensify their reflection quite seriously and embark on educating their fellows against perpetrating GBVF. It is men who kill women, and not women killing themselves.”
Mkhize says Kwasa’s father has spoken to her, and said his daughter was excited to go back to school after the easing of the lockdown regulations.
He told her: “She asked me to book her a plane ticket to Johannesburg as she was returning to school on the 26th of this month. Her mother and I were happy that she was eager to go further her studies with such passion.”
The accused will appear in the Dutjwa Magistrate’s Court again on August 26.
