Katlego Bereng family awaits return of son’s remains

The family of Katlego Bereng, whose body was burnt in Thabo Bester prison cell, says they are yet to receive his remains from authorities.
Bereng's body was burned in a cell in the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May last year.
At the time the body was thought to be that of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester, who faked his own death to enable him to escape.
His body was identified over the weekend after a lengthy investigation.
His father Batho Mpholo says they were informed that the remains of their son, Katlego Junior Bereng, will only be released and viewed once certain procedures have been completed.
Mpholo has laid criminal charges against security company G4S and the health department with the help of ActionSA.
“Today we are opening a case and is shortly just about procedures, as to how my son’s body got into the hospital and since it was unidentified, what procedures followed?
"Was it registered properly, how did it end up in the mortuary, and then who collected it from the mortuary, how did it end up in the hands of G4S, who collected it? Those are the charges that we are laying because it clearly shows that no procedures were followed at all,” he said.
