Khan discharged from hospital after Johannesburg shooting
Suspended Crime Intelligence head Major-General Feroz Khan has been discharged from hospital following a shooting incident in Houghton, Johannesburg last month.
Khan has been moved to an undisclosed location where he will undergo rehabilitation as he continues recovering from injuries sustained in what has been described as an apparent assassination attempt.
The shooting happened just days before Khan was scheduled to testify before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, commonly known as the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Khan’s attorney, Mohammed Valley, confirmed that the Commission had been informed of his discharge from hospital.
Valley said the development would allow Khan’s legal team to begin preparing for his eventual appearance before the inquiry, where he is expected to respond to allegations made by witnesses.
"We’re encouraged by the fact that he’s been released from the hospital because we can then start preparing hopefully, in the short term, the evidence that we intend to now contradict what was stated in the commission by those witnesses who haven’t been truthful."
He said the immediate priority remained Khan’s recovery, adding that the shooting had delayed his opportunity to present his version of events before the commission.
"We certainly do have the answers from General Khan, but it’s for him to present the evidence, not for us."
Khan’s absence from legal proceedings has also affected a separate criminal matter in which he is facing charges alongside Gauteng Hawks head Lieutenant-General Ebrahim Kadwa and businessman Tariq Downes.
The case, which relates to allegations involving a raw gold bar and abuse of authority dating back to 2021, was postponed to 2 September after Khan failed to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court earlier this month due to his medical condition.
A warrant of arrest was initially authorised after his absence, but it was later stayed after the court accepted medical documentation explaining his inability to attend.
Khan’s attorney Kylen Ghirao told the court that both the magistrate and the prosecution had accepted the medical certificate provided.
"The State was satisfied that we had a valid reason due to his medical incapacity, and therefore the warrant was stayed to the next appearance."
His legal team remains optimistic that Khan will be fit enough to return to court when the matter resumes in September.
The State is expected to complete its investigations and provide full disclosure of evidence to the defence by 1 August, while Kadwa and Downes remain out on bail.
