Kings Cinema a sign of hope for old Alex
Updated | By Neo Motloung and Lulutho Mkosi
The opening of the historic Kings Cinema in Alexandra in 1943 saw the residents of the township flocking to the building to watch movies on the big screen.
The opening was seven years before the 1950 Group Areas Act, which formalised apartheid and segregated South Africans by race.
William Volmink, a descendant of the family who owns the cinema in a partnership with Peoples Theatre, says thebuilding suffered several attacks during that era for playing pro-African films.
He hopes the revamping of the cinema will fill the residents of Alex with a sense of nostalgia, while watching the latest and greatest South African and the world has to offer.
