A knife wielding parolee has been shot and killed during an attack on an elderly couple on their farm in Hendrina, Mpumalanga.
The suspect, who has been identified as 39-year-old Joseph Vilakazi, broke into the couple’s farmhouse on Sunday evening.
Police spokesperson Donald Mdluli says the couple was not at home when the suspect gained entry into their home.
"On their arrival at 18:30 in the evening as they opened the door they were welcomed by an unknown stranger armed with a knife. And then the alleged suspect was somehow shot by the 70-year-old man."
The suspect attempted to flee after being shot.

"Vilakazi is said to have tried to find refuge through the window upstairs which added to his injuries and suffered a broken leg. He was certified dead on the scene,” says Mdluli.
He says Vilakazi was previously sentenced to fifteen years in prison before being released on parole.
"He has been convicted of 14 house breaking and theft cases and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Hence he was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison.”
