Kubayi lauds judicial system as SA Constitution marks 30 years
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi believes that while the Constitution has not fully realised its promises, there are still significant achievements to celebrate.
Kubayi launched the 30-year anniversary of the Constitution at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg on Monday.
She said the implementation of the Constitution has too often fallen short of the aspirations.
Among the accomplishments she mentioned is the structural integration of the judicial system, which marks progress in the country's legal framework.
The event was attended by leaders from Chapter 9 institutions, academics, and various civil society movements.
It coincides with the launch of Human Rights Month.
The anniversary celebrates thirty years since former President Nelson Mandela signed the Constitution in 1996, following its adoption.
"The communities that bore the heaviest cost of apartheid's deliberate impoverishment have not experienced the pace of transformation that the Constitution's provisions reasonably implied," she said
"Those who were systematically denied access to property, education, and the basic conditions of a dignified life have found that, while the legal order has been fundamentally recast, their material circumstances have not shifted with commensurate decisiveness."
