Kunene held first round talks with e-hailing operators and the taxi association on Friday.

He says the purpose of the meeting with station commanders is to ensure that all resolutions agreed on during the meeting, are being implemented.

These resolutions include the tightening of security at Maponya mall, as well as other malls in the area.

Kunene told Jacaranda FM News on Saturday morning that certain decisions were taken on Friday.

“We will be meeting next week with all station commanders of all the police stations in Soweto, with all representatives from the mall.

“The malls also must up their security, especially in the evening. We also appeal to the malls to install cameras that have got AI, Artificial Intelligence, and also number plate recognition so that they can be able to assist the police when there’s any acts of violence or illegal people picking up passengers at the malls. Illegal operators.”

Violence erupted outside of Maponya mall on Thursday over the operations of unauthorised pick-up services known as “amaphela”.

One person was shot outside the Mall while three vehicles believed to be from e-hailing operators were also torched.

An additional four vehicles were also damaged in the violence.

Kunene says there was an understanding during the meeting on Friday that there is a criminal element with an agenda that is not known at the moment.
