Shabnam Baran, who's with Stray Paws South Africa, says they had their hands full when torrential rains struck last week.

Umlazi, south of Durban, was where they carried out one of their main rescue missions.

"There's been a lot of dos like in Umlazi and we had to access to Umlazi, so we had to for about two days to get the dogs and I had to meet them halfway to receive the dogs from them," says Baran.

"These dogs were in such a bad condition, I got a puppy at home that I've taken in. The rest of the dogs, we put them into foster homes."

Clint Halkett-Siddall, who's with the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife, says they're currently housing 520 animals - which is unusual during their quiet season.

"We have had quite a lot of monkey admissions of monkeys that have been hit by cars which we presume if due to the bad roads and poor visibility.

"We also admitted a large number of adult birds which have been grounded due to lack of energy and another strange thing is the admission of two terrapins, they were walking along the side of the road which is quite strange for them."

Local snake catcher Nick Evans rescued a three-metre-long python tangled in debris on Westbrook Beach, near Tongaat.

He says another dead python, a rare frog species and a crocodile washed down onto the beach.

Local snake catcher Nick Evans rescued a three-metre-long python tangled in debris on Westbrook Beach, near Tongaat. He says another dead python, a rare frog species and a crocodile washed down onto the beach.

"It was just so weird because, among the debris, there was loads of frogs, insects - all sorts of things you don't usually see on a beach. It was all bizarre.

"It was quite an easy catch. The snake was cold and tired, obviously been washed around in the waves and it must have been a terrible experience for the poor thing."
