KZN man douses house with petrol, killing toddler in fire

A KwaZulu-Natal man has been arrested after he set a house alight, killing a 2-year-old girl.
It’s understood the 24-year old man, who was known to the victims, entered the house where the trio was sitting.
He then emptied five litres of petrol in the house and locked them in.
KZN police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the suspect left the grandmother, daughter and granddaughter to burn.
“It’s alleged that the victim was relaxing at home in KwaNyuswa in Ezinqoleni with her daughter and her granddaughter when an known suspect entered. The suspect had a 5-litre container with petrol and he poured it all over the house where the victim was sitting with her family.
According to Gwala, the occupants of the house managed to escape but the toddler succumbed to her burn wounds in hospital.
“They were taken to hospital for medical attention. The 22-mont- old granddaughter later passed away in hospital due to burn wounds that were sustained,” she says.
The suspect handed himself over to police later on Wednesday.
He’s expected to appear in court on Friday on charges of murder and attempted murder.
