The bodies of a mother and her two sons were discovered at a home in Verulam, north of Durban, on Monday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says the three died in what appears to have been an incident of murder-suicide.
The woman allegedly fed her four children, two daughters and two sons, rat poison before sending the two girls to the shop.
She then hung herself and her two sons.

Reaction Unit South Africa paramedics spokesperson Prem Balram says the girls - aged 10 and 12 - were treated and sent to a hospital.
"They were treated by paramedics on scene and sent to a provincial hospital. They were given Ratex, a rodent poison, they were approximately given 8 pallets each - according to the children - and then sent out to the tuckshop and upon their return, they discovered the bodies of their sibling and mother.”
Mbele says the motive for the crime is not yet known.
"She sent other children to the shop before she committed this crime. So double-murder as well inquest is being investigated.
"The motive of the killing of the children and committing of suicide is not known at the moment.”
