Land redistribution tops agenda at Traditional Leaders Indaba
Land redistribution will top the agenda at the first Inaugural Indigenous and Traditional Leaders Indaba at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
President Jacob Zuma opened the indaba this morning.
The president emphasised the importance of economic liberation and land redistribution.
President Zuma said over 90% of land claims are currently settled through financial compensation.
"This practice perpetuates the dispossession we are trying to solve," he said.
Zuma further urged those who obtained land to not re-sell it.
"What made us poor was the dispossession of land. Once you have it you can't sell it. It means you don't understand your heritage."
Earlier Cooperative Governance Minister Des Van Rooyen emphasised the indaba's importance, saying it will help address traditional practices which are being threatened by legislation.
Both President Zuma and minister van Rooyen were this weekend implicated in explosive emails published by the Sunday Times and the City Press.
The emails demonstrated how the president and some of his ministers allowed the Gupta family to influence certain state decisions.
