Latest crime stats show increase in murder, rape and robberies

South Africans experienced another increase in violent crime between October and December compared to the same period in the previous year.

The South African Police Service presented the latest crime statistics to MPs on Parliament’s police committee on Friday morning.


More than 7 000 murders, 15 000 sexual offences and 12 000 common robberies crimes were reported during the third quarter.


“There were 7 555 murders, an increase of 696. Sexual offences increased by 1 357 to 15 545. There were 7 016 attempted murders, an increase of 1 357. Assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm increased by 4 069 to 52 741, while common assault increased by 5 660 to 52 741. There were 12 752 common robberies, an increase of 2 228 and 32 829 aggravated robberies, an increase of 3 686,” the police’s Norman Sekhukhune said.


The stats were presented to MPs ahead of the official release of the quarterly crime stats by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday afternoon.


Sekhukhune said cash-in-transit heists had decreased by 5% during the reporting period.


“There were 57 heists between October and December 2022, compared to 60 in the same period in 2021.”
