MMC for Public Safety in Johannesburg David Tembe visited the area on Tuesday.

Tembe engaged with disgruntled members of the community at the Pan Africa Mall in the Alex CBD where scores had gathered amid threats of a shutdown.

Dudula Movement, which broke away from the controversial Operation Dudula, wants non-South African businesses out of the township in a bid to reclaim the local economy.

Tensions peaked in the community on Monday but settled by Tuesday.

A heavy police presence remained as SAPS and Joburg metro police's boots were on the ground.

Tembe said there were fears of renewed violence overnight.

"The sense is that perhaps tonight they might be assaulted by the foreigners," Tembe said on Tuesday evening.

But he vowed additional reinforcement would be available.

"Should the need arise, we are in a state of readiness.

"Anything that happens, we are ready to deal with it," Tembe added.
