Learners in on-camera fight suspended
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
Two learners from Lyttelton Manor High School in Centurion have been suspended after a video emerged showing them in a fist-fight.
The scuffle between the two learners, a boy and a girl, took place on the school grounds last Friday.
A video of the brawl has since gone viral.
In the video, a boy is seen punching the girl and pinning her to the ground.
Some of the pupils tried to pull the boy off the girl and can be heard shouting: “Don’t hurt her!”
Disciplinary processes against the two pupils are already underway and both sets of parents have been informed about the procedures.
The disciplinary hearing is expected to be held on February 24.
Gauteng education’s Steve Mabona says preliminary investigations revealed it was the girl who instigated the fight by attacking the boy, who then retaliated.
A psychosocial team has also been sent to the school to offer support to pupils and staff affected by the incident.
“The department urges all learners to refrain from acts of misconduct in schools and implore parents to assist the department in instilling learner discipline, in and outside the school environment,” said the province’s education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
