Lesufi: Gautrain to expand to Soweto, Mamelodi, Lanseria
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the government will invest R120 billion in the expansion of Gautrain services to new areas in the coming years.
The new routed will include Soweto via Fourways, Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, Lanseria and Springs.
Lesufi delivered his State of the Province Address in Pretoria on Monday.
"The Gautrain rail expansion will be a gateway to opportunity, creating more than 125,000 construction jobs while igniting growth in property, retail, and logistics along its path,” he said.
He addes that the project to build a bullet train between Gauteng and Limpopo “has started to move”.
The concept has been in the pipeline since 2022, and three years later Lesufi remains adamant that it will soon become a reality.
"The Limpopo-Gauteng Speed Train project is gaining momentum. Following the announcement last year, it has been agreed that given the project’s magnitude and intricacy, it will be executed in multiple phases,” the premier said.
"The integrated concept document, endorsed by both Gauteng and Limpopo Premiers, has been approved and will be ready for signing by both provinces in due course.
"We are jointly ready to approach the National Department of Transport for consultation.”
