Lesufi moves to establish political killings task team

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the provincial government is planning to establish a political killings task team in the province to investigate murder dockets dating back to 2010.

This specialised unit, set to be launched within the next four weeks, will be tasked with investigating and resolving high-profile and politically sensitive cases within the province.

The work by the political violence task teams has come to light recently following the explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi following the disbandment of the team in KZN.

Lesufi briefed the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

"There are people that were killed and no one follows up, and I'm glad that the new minister listened to us when we requested that we need this kind of support.

"Unfortunately, the police currently are going through difficulties. Our approach was that, let's establish a task team in our province and we have to extend it even to 2010." he said

On May 31, an IFP Member of Parliament Khethamabala Sithole was assassinated at the Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.

ANC councillor Thabang Masemola (36), was also gunned down in Mamelodi East, Tshwane.
