Lesufi’s SOPA: Strong rhetoric, concerns over delivery – analyst
Political analyst Professor Pieter Duvenage says Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s State of the Province Address failed to inspire confidence.
Lesufi delivered his address on Monday in Nasrec, outlining the provincial government's plans for 2026.
These include creating thousands of jobs, fixing decaying infrastructure, and fighting crime.
Duvenage, who is attached to North-West University, said the critical question is whether the promises will translate into real outcomes
"While the premier has acknowledged them, the real test will be whether the provincial government takes meaningful action to resolve them," Duvenage said on Tuesday.
"Looking at the track record of Premier Lesufi and his administration over the past four years, there have often been strong statements, detailed plans, and compelling rhetoric.
"However, implementation and service delivery have not matched the ambition of those promises."
Lesufi also announced that R760 million has been set aside for infrastructure upgrades in Johannesburg to address the city’s ongoing water supply crisis.
This includes the construction of a new reservoir and a tower in Brixton to improve supply.
"The water crisis appears to be a systemic issue. Over many years, water infrastructure has deteriorated significantly,” Duvenhage said.
"Addressing it now requires more than temporary fixes. While short-term repairs may help in isolated cases, what is truly needed is a strategic, holistic approach with sustainable plans spanning 10, 15, and even 20 years — to properly resolve the water supply challenges."
