Light at the end of the tunnel for Metrobus commuters
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Labour Court has ruled in favour of Metrobus in its effort to halt the week-long strike by members of the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union (Demawusa).
The court in Johannesburg on Friday granted Metrobus leave of appeal an earlier ruling, which gave workers the green light to down tools in a protected strike.
Workers are demanding improved salaries and to be given office space at Metrobus offices like majority unions Samwu and Imatu.

Metrobus spokesperson Goodwill Shivuri says Demawusa workers are no longer on a protected strike and will be expected to return to work on Monday.
“The judgment was read out this morning, it was set for 10 o’clock, and the judge has given us leave of appeal. So that suspends the strike. Demawusa can’t go on strike on the basis of those two demands.
However, Demawusa says it will continue to strike until all the workers’ demands have been met.
