According to police reports, the rape incident allegedly took place on Sunday during the victim’s medical examination by the doctor.

“The traumatised patient immediately reported the incident to other healthcare staff, who in turn alerted the police. A case of rape has since been opened,”  said the South African Police Service provincial spokesperson, Malesela Ledwaba.

He added that cases of this nature are taken seriously and are disturbing when committed by individuals trusted with the care of vulnerable members of the community.

“We are treating this case with the urgency and sensitivity it deserves, and we urge anyone who may have additional information to come forward.”

In a separate rape incident in the province, the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Phalaborwa, launched a manhunt for four suspects who allegedly gang-raped a 16-year-old girl last Wednesday.

The four suspects allegedly kidnapped the victim and drove to nearby bushes where they took turns raping her.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the victim was on her way from a local shop when a white Toyota Quantum with unknown registration carrying four occupants stopped next to her. Two suspects alighted and forced her into the vehicle,” said Ledwaba.

He added that after the rape incident, the suspects drove back and dropped the victim near the area where they had picked her up before fleeing the scene.

Police have opened a case of kidnapping and four counts of rape; however, the suspects remain unidentified at this time.
