Villagers on the shoulder of Punda Maria road between Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou on Monday alerted police after they saw a partly burnt car and clothes, which allegedly belonged to the man, the bush, police said.

When police arrived, they found that there was a dead man lying half naked in his new VW Polo. Police discovered that his throat was slit and it is believed that he died as results of a sharp instrument attack.

Levubu police spokesman Warrant Officer Solly Mukhola said the victim was identified at the scene and was believed to be a local man, working in Gauteng who was on his way home to see his parents when the incident happened.

Mukhola said the victim did not reach his destination and was attacked with a sharp instrument by an unknown suspect.

“He was sliced on his neck with sharp instrument, his throat was slit [and he was] left lying crossing the driver seat to the front passenger seat bleeding and half naked, he did not have shirt on,” said Mukhola.

He said the motive for attack was unknown and said that police were investigating.

“We don’t know the motive of the killing, because his cell phone and car were not stolen, it’s like there is another motive other than robbery because we found his cell phone.”

Police believed that perpetrators tried to burn the car to get rid of the evidence.

Mukhola said police were investigating if the man might have been killed elsewhere and dumped at the village.

The discovery triggered a protest and burning of tyres which disturbed traffic along Punda Maria road on Monday evening. - ANA
