Limpopo primary school teacher accused of raping a grade 7 pupil is back in Mankweng Magistrate's Court for formal bail application.
The 58-year-old man was arrested after he was found by another teacher allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl at their school in Makotopong, outside Polokwane, last month.
He returns to court for the second time after his first appearance was postponed for profiling and further investigations.
While the police had previously reported that the alleged abuse began in November last year, it emerged in court that the teacher had allegedly been sexually assaulting the pupil since July last year until he was caught.
ActionSA provincial chairperson, Victor Mothamela has called on the Department of Social Development to deploy social workers in schools to closely monitor issues of gender-based violence.
"We believe that this might not start only at the school," he said.
Meanwhile, commenting after the suspect's first appearance, the National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzangi said more charges of sexual grooming could be added against the teacher.
