Police Minister Bheki Cele has clashed with anti-crime activist Ian Cameron at a community meeting at Gugulethu in the Western Cape.
The altercation took place during a community meeting on Tuesday meant to discuss policing in Nyanga and Gugulethu.
The Action Society leader was told to “shut up” by the minister after he accused Cele of neglecting the Western Cape.
“I did not join human rights battles yesterday,” an angry Cele said.
“That is why I was sent to prison, that’s why I was sent to Robben Island, that’s why I lived in the cold water, that’s why I ate bad food, because I was fighting for human rights. Don’t teach me about human rights, don’t tell me about the safety of my people, I fought for it, I nearly died for it, I was arrested for it.
“Don’t provoke me, don’t talk things that you have studied, and you have heard about. I have lived the life and I am not going to take any nonsense of someone who regards me as a garden boy.”
Cameron was subsequently removed from the venue.

Cameron believes Cele is politicising the plight of the people.
“We are consulting with our legal team currently. We will be discussing how we will be laying a complaint with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, which I am sure we will do. And we are also considering laying assault charges against the members that forcefully removed me.”

But Cele’s spokesperson Lirandzu Themba defended the decision to remove Cameron from the venue.
“He was removed after repeatedly interrupting a meeting despite being given a fair chance to raise his concerns prior, without any interruptions. Mr Cameron was escorted out of the meeting after failing to stop his disruptive behaviour," she wrote on social media.
