LISTEN: Guterres says two-state solution only option for peace
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
United Nations secretary-general António Guterres has reiterated his call for a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Guterres made the call in a conversation with Borge Brende, the President of the World Economic Forum, on Wednesday morning.
The call comes after 102 days into the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Fighting has ravaged Gaza since Hamas's unprecedented October 7 attacks on Israel.
"The two-state solution is an absolutely central way to solve these problems and absolutely central to preserve a minimum of peace and serenity in the region,” Guterres said.
"The spill-over that is already taking place, the risk of a full flash confrontation in Lebanon will be a total disaster. We need to avoid it all costs.
"What we are seeing at the Red Sea, all these demonstrations that it’s not enough, it’s very important to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza, it’s very important to release the hostages, it’s very important to solve all these problems. We need to find once and for all a total commitment at the international community for a two-state solution to exist in Israel and Palestine," he said.
