[LISTEN] I am being treated unfairly, says President Jacob Zuma
President Jacob Zuma has branded the decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) to recall him as unfair.
Zuma was speaking during an interview with the SABC on Wednesday.
It was the first time Zuma spoke in public since the decision by the ANC that he needs to resign.
“I asked them, what is it that I have done? Speaker after speaker, no one ever came to say look this is what you have done,” Zuma said.
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule told the media Zuma was was recalled to ensure there is one centre of power.
Zuma has rubbished the claim, saying it is not ANC policy.
“It is not the policy of the ANC that once you elect a new party president at the national conference then there must be a change over. There is nothing of that nature. Once you take the movement into a national conference, a new president is elected and takes over the leadership of the ANC and prepares for the next 18 months, while the state president finishes his tenure."
The President says he initially agreed to resign, but needed at least until June to finish his work and unite the party.
The ANC Parliamentary caucuses also confirmed that the party has decided to remove Zuma via a motion of no confidence tomorrow.
Zuma still has until the end of Wednesday to resign. If he refuses, the ANC will support a motion of no confidence in him on Thursday.
He said he will release a statement later today to clarify his point of view further.
