LISTEN: Kelly Khumalo 'ready for her day in court' amid renewed Meyiwa claims
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Award-winning songstress Kelly Khumalo is eagerly waiting for her day in court to dispel allegations she killed her boyfriend Senzo Meyiwa.
This according to Khumalo's lawyer, Magdelene Moonsamy.
On Wednesday, the High Court in Pretoria heard explosive allegations against the former girlfriend of slain Bafana Bafana captain, including claims there was evidence Khumalo fired the fatal shot in October 2014.
While an eyewitness is yet to testify to this effect, Moonsamy says her client doesn’t take the claims lightly.
"We will consider today's allegations and respond on that later today or tomorrow. I think it's now time to protect the interest of my client as you are aware.
"My client has been through intense aggravating circumstances since 2014 and eight years later, she is demonised - every excuse that you can find to case aspersion on her is being done and that we take exception to with most certainty. We will revert on the allegations in a formal reply."
Moonsamy adds she was taken aback by the prosecution's decision to not call Khumalo and others that were at her Vosloorus home at the time of the shooting.
Khumalo's sister Zandile, her boyfriend, as well as long-time friend Longwe Twala are among those believed to have witnessed the incident.
"If these issues that are being alleged are being utilised for anything but factual purposes and are being sensationalised to draw attention, the lives of my client's family including many people have been endangered, and sensationalism as such without giving the factual background is what concerns me,” says Moonsamy.
"We haven't as yet tested the evidence, we haven't tested the versions of the accused, we haven't tested the versions of the witnesses those who were present.
"Let's deal with the facts as they are presented, facts that are tested, not imagination."
Moonsamy says it remains unclear when Khumalo will take the stand.
"I can't speak on behalf of the prosecution’s plan. She [Khumalo] wants an opportunity to present her case in court."
