Mahumapelo announced that he would be stepping down last month following violent protests in the province, demanding his removal amid mounting claims of corruption and a crippling strike in the healthcare sector.

Mokgoro was nominated unanimously at the special meeting of the ANC’s National Working Committee on Wednesday.

The 79-year-old Mokgoro previously served as a director-general in the province and also up headed the National School of Government.

The announcement was made at the ANC’s headquarters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

“We will relentlessly support the new premier. As officials in the province, we will be working with him and inviting him to be part of the structures of the organisation so that we can make sure we strengthen the links and communications among ourselves,”

Mahumapelo told reporters at Luthuli House.

Mahumapelo will resign from the legislature to make way for Mokgoro who will then be nominated and sworn in on Friday.

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule said Mokgoro's age will not affect his ability to stabilise the province since he has extensive experience in administration.
