[LISTEN] "The uncomfortable debates around Inxeba are urgent"
Producers of the South African film Inxeba, The Wound, say the uncomfortable conversations around the movie are urgent.
Casting Director, Cait Pansegrouw, adds the movie tells a story of Xhosa gay love story.
The film is set in the Eastern Cape, using the theme of Ulwaluka, a traditional Xhosa circumcision and initiation school preparing men into manhood.
Pansegrouw says the writers which include Thando Mqgolozona, Malusi Bengu and John Trengove deliberately used this backdrop to interrogate patriarchy and toxic masculinity.
Outrage erupted in the Eastern Cape when the film premiered last week causing disruptions at several cinemas.
The screening of the movie was cancelled at several cinemas around the country due to threats of violence.
Pansegrouw says the film poses the question, "what does it mean to be a man?"
