Listeriosis death toll hits 200
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
Health authorities say they expect the death toll to rise even further.
Two hundred people have now died from listeriosis since January 2017, with a total of 1024 cases reported, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported on Thursday.
The latest report on the food-borne disease says the number of cases have declined since the product recall.
The outbreak has been linked to an Enterprise facility in Polokwane.
Tiger Brands has since also confirmed that independent tests confirmed the presence the ST6 strain at its facility.
There has been two subsequent applications for class action against the company.
According to human rights lawyer, Richard Spoor, discussions are taking place in an attempt to consolidate the two separate class action suits brought by different legal firms.
"There have also been discussions with Tiger Brands and their lawyers about a way forward, and finding a mutually agreed way forward. We hopeful that within the next few weeks we will find some of agreement on how to take the matter on."
This could still grow as the death toll and the number of confirmed cases continue to rise.
The NICD reports the majority of cases have been recorded in Gauteng (372), the Western Cape (113), and KwaZulu-Natal (47).
