Load-shedding impacts Gauteng hospitals
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The recent bout of load-shedding has had a severe impact on hospitals and clinics in Gauteng.
The forced blackouts has resulted in some generators failing, which meant that operations and x-rays had to be rescheduled.
Spokesperson for the health department in Gauteng, Khutso Rabothata, says the impact was especially severe at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg.
A generator supplying power to the hospital’s emergency unit broke down during load-shedding.
The generator has since been fixed.
Rabothata says fears that generators at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital might fail never materialised.
Waiting times at hospitals and clinics also increased during load-shedding, as manual admin systems had to be implemented due to computers not working.
Rabothata says the department are also investigating the situation at clinics such as the Badirile Clinic in Randfontein.
