Looting-hit Shoprite Checkers to reopen at Jabulani Mall
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
There will be some relief for Soweto consumers with the news that the Shoprite Checkers store at Jabulani Mall will reopen its doors on Friday.

The store closed its doors after it was looted and vandalised during the recent civil unrest in Gauteng.
The reopening of the store was confirmed by Dr Mike Nkuna, who is the CEO of the Masingita Group.
The group owns 15 malls across South Africa, including Protea Glen, Jabulani and Bara Mall.
“We are not going to be deterred, we’re going ahead. Shoprite will be operational from tomorrow (Friday) and in Protea next week,” he told a Brand SA webinar on Thursday.

The Protea Glen and Jabulani malls bore the brunt of the looting spree in the province when looters took anything that their hands could find.
Both malls now stand empty.
However, Nkuna says both malls will be fully operational in just three months.
“And for the next two to three months we’ll be 100% operational.”
It's estimated that between 8000 to 12 000 people’s employment at both malls have been affected by the civil arrest.
This includes hawkers that worked outside both establishments.
