The city’s mayor Geoffery Makhubo confirmed Masuku’s leave of absence on Friday.

This comes after the Sunday Independent published a report linking her and her husband, Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku, to a R125 million tender for protective gear.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng on Thursday asked the couple to step aside amid the investigations.

"Whilst the allegations currently under investigation by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) do not relate to the work and portfolio of Councillor Masuku in the City of Johannesburg, the outcome of that investigation is of interest to the executive mayor," says Mayoral spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase.

Ndamase says an acting MMC will be announced in due course.

They join President Cyril Ramaphosa's spokesperson Khusela Diko's leave of absence over the R125 million personal protective equipment tender awarded to her husband King Madzikane II Diko's Royal Bacha projects. Diko took leave from all her government roles on Monday. The Dikos, who have close ties to the Masuku couple, claim the tenders were later cancelled at their request.
