Lunchtime News Edition - Child porn suspect nabbed

A 37-year-old man will be back in court in April facing child pornography related charges. The Times newspaper yesterday reported that he was arrested after an intensive police investigation. The police's Heila Niemand says while searching his Plettenberg Bay home, the suspect allegedly admitted to police of being in possession of thousands of gruesome baby pornography images. Niemand says it started with the arrest of a suspect in Belgium whereafter Belgian authorities notified the South African police.

 

The ANC has reacted to the City of Cape Town's proposal to rename Table Bay Boulevard after former president FW de Klerk. National spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says de Klerk was not a messiah, adding he was not the one who liberated South Africa. The City of Cape Town yesterday said the street may be renamed if the council accepted a proposal by the city's naming committee. De Klerk was the last head of state under Apartheid. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize with South Africa's first democratic President Nelson Mandela for their role in ending apartheid.

 

Residents in Malamulele including the task team, have described their town shutdown protest as a resounding success. The stay away protest started on Monday and resulted in pupils missing the first three days of school. Residents are angry over delays in negotiations to secure a seperate municipality for the town. The task team is also expected to make an announcement at the end of the shutdown later today.

 

Two metro police officers were attacked by illegal miners near the Benoni Gold mine. Metro police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago says the suspects allegedly jumped out of the bushes and opened fir on the officers who were patrolling the area last night. Kgasago also added that officers did not pursue the suspects after back-up assisted them because of the difficult terrain.
