Madlanga commission hears details of money trail linking Carrim to Matlala, Maumela
The atmosphere remains tense at the Madlanga Commission, where ANC-linked North West businessman Suliman Carrim is testifying.
His lawyers are pulling out all the stops to prevent him from answering questions about his dealings with businessman Morgan Maumela, who has been identified as a key player in Tembisa’s largest looting syndicate.
It is alleged that Carrim and Maumela, along with alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, were part of a tender-rigging syndicate operating at Tembisa Hospital.
The Special Investigating Unit has since uncovered three coordinated syndicates responsible for looting more than R2 billion intended for healthcare.

Evidence before the commission shows that tens of millions of rand moved between Carrim, Maumela, and Matlala.
The businessman’s lawyers have repeatedly attempted to shield him from answering questions related to the hospital.
Earlier, the businessman’s lawyer, Rafik Bhana SC, told the commission that they only received the documents related to Maumela on Monday morning.
But evidence leader Mathew Chaskalson says Carrim’s lawyers were fully aware that the six pages of documents pertain to issues involving Maumela.
“Mr Carrim and his legal team are aware that issues relating to Morgan Maumela are going to be traversed in this matter. They were listed both in the notice in terms of regulation ten-six requesting the statement, and in the summons. For reasons I don’t know, which hopefully Mr Carrim will explain, despite being instructed to issue a statement concerning the nature and extent of his relationship with Mr Morgan Maumela, he declined to do so. He clearly doesn’t want to speak about Mr Morgan Maumela.”
