Madlanga warns Khan’s lawyers over ‘speculative’ comments to media
The chairperson of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has cautioned lawyers representing the suspended deputy head of crime intelligence, Feroz Khan, against making unsubstantiated claims linking the commission to Khan's shooting.
Police are investigating the circumstances under which Khan was shot in Houghton, on Sunday, just as he was scheduled to appear before the commission on Wednesday, 1 July.
Addressing the media outside the health facility where the senior officer is receiving medical treatment, Advocate Zubair Khan said they had concerns about witnesses being targeted.
“One person who appeared before the commission has already been murdered as we know. There’s been an attempt on General Khan’s life as he was to appear before the commission, and there is grave concern that there might be a compromise from within the commission. But, at this stage its speculative.”

A visibly unimpressed Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga warned Adv Khan never to repeat such statements.
“If you are ever to make media briefings again, be careful of what you say. Don’t say anything that may tend to impugn the integrity of this commission.”
Adv tendered an unconditional apology to the commission.
KHAN EVIDENCE TO BE LED IN HIS ABSENCE, IN-CAMERA APPLICATION WITHDRAWN
The Madlanga Commission's evidence leaders will on Friday lead evidence about the crime intelligence deputy in his absence.
This after his lawyers told commissioners that he remained sedated and in a critical condition, after he was shot on Sunday.
Evidence leader Adila Hassim SC told commissioners that the process would be similar to that of Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk, and that Khan would have an opportunity to respond to what is presented to the commission.
Khan's legal team withdrew his application to appear in camera after commissioners advised t them that it had little prospect of succeeding.
The commission described it as hopeless: “I have said it's vague; I could actually go further and say it's hopeless.”
Khan's lawyers withdrew the application, pending instructions from their clients whether to resubmit.
