Mashaba calls on Gauteng departments to settle Joburg debt

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba on Monday told the Gauteng government to pay up.
Mashaba said he instituted an inquiry after claims that some department were not paying rates and taxes on properties in the city.
"I received a media inquiry just over a week ago as a result of the EFF's statement saying the ANC provincial and national governments are not paying their rates and taxes," he said.
The mayor says the city is owed R259 million in rates and taxes from several provincial departments.
According to Mashaba, the Department of Health owes R59 million, the Department of Infrastructure and Development R161 million and the Department of Human Settlement R39 million.
"I dropped a letter this morning to Premier David Makhura requesting his intervention, because I expect the government to be an exemplary to civil society," Mashaba said.
Mashaba said he has given the departments 30 days to settle their debt.
