His spokesperson, Brian Setswambung, says the Premier has made an appeal to those taking to the streets, to end the action.

"He also wants the people coordinating this to come and engage, rather than continue to intimate people and continue with the violence," says Setswambung.

Various businesses and governmental offices in the area closed due to the action.

Nine people have been arrested thus far.

Meanwhile, Setswambung has also confirmed reports that the premier has fired  Dr. Thabo Lekalakala.

Lekalakala allegedly played a role in the pre-payment of R30 million to a Gupta-linked company, Mediosa.

Mahumapelo instituted a forensic investigation into the provincial Health Department after a public outcry.

"Premier Mahumapelo has suspended Dr. Lekalakala following the receipt of a preliminary report from the investigators."

Setswambung says disciplinary proceedings will be instituted against the doctor.

Mahumapelo has been embroiled in various allegations of corruption against him.

African National Congress (ANC) Youth League President, Collen Maine, earlier publicly admitted that the Premier introduced him to the Gupta family.

The latest allegation of corruption involves the Premier’s son, who allegedly received a R1.1 million bursary from State-owned arms manufacturer Denel.

Denel has however denied that the bursary was awarded in contravention of the company's policy.
