Maile suspends Tshwane speaker, Da Gama

Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Lebogang Maile has suspended Tshwane council speaker Katlego Mathebe and her former Johannesburg counterpart Vasco da Gama.
Maile announced the suspensions in Midrand on Thursday, saying he decided to act following claims of misconduct against Mathebe and Da Gama from council members.

Da Gama was removed as Joburg speaker last month through a vote of no confidence but remains a DA councillor.
In Tshwane, a motion of no confidence against Mathebe has not yet been tabled amid the collapse of several council meetings to decide on her and Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa’s fate.
Mathebe has been suspended for six months without pay and Da Gama for 3 months and will also have to do without his salary.
“It is imperative to note that these decisions are based on strengthening local government by ensuring those elected into positions of responsibility carry out their work in the best interest of the electorate,” Maile said.
“The continuous collapse of council has a negative impact on service delivery within the municipality or any other municipality for that matter.”
