Major road closures expected around FNB Stadium for Soweto derby

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes due to road closures and traffic diversions near FNB Stadium on Saturday for the Betway Premiership Soweto Derby.
The highly anticipated match between Kaizer Chiefs FC and Orlando Pirates FC is expected to draw large crowds, prompting the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to implement a comprehensive traffic management plan in the Nasrec precinct.
Full road closures and diversions will begin at 11:00, with stadium gates opening at 11:30 ahead of the 15:30 kick-off.
Authorities anticipate heavy congestion from early afternoon and advise non-attending motorists to avoid the area entirely.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says road users should familiarise themselves with the traffic plan and consider alternative routes.
"We urge all road users to familiarise themselves with the traffic management measures for the day and plan their routes accordingly.
"Several key routes around the stadium will be restricted or closed, including sections of Nasrec Road, Soweto Highway, Crownwood Road and Booysens Reserve Road.
"Access to certain areas will be limited to accredited vehicles, emergency services, public transport and match-day operations."
Fihla has encouraged motorists not attending the match to bypass the precinct entirely.
"Motorists travelling through the area should make use of alternative routes such as the N1, M1 and N12 highways, as well as Main Reef Road, to avoid congestion around the stadium."
He adds that officers will be deployed at strategic points to manage vehicle movement and ensure the safety of both motorists and pedestrians, as no person without a valid accreditation will be allowed within designated road closure zones.
Public transport services, including Rea Vaya buses, designated taxis and park-and-ride facilities, will operate to assist spectators travelling to and from the venue.
Johannesburg Metro Police have encouraged fans to arrive early to avoid congestion and allow sufficient time for security screening.
Residents living near the stadium have also been advised to plan their movements carefully throughout the day.
Fihla says the traffic plan is designed to prioritise safety and efficiency.
"These measures are in place to ensure the safe movement of spectators, residents and motorists, while maintaining order around one of the country’s biggest football fixtures."
