Makhubo receives SIU report on Covid-19 corruption

Johannesburg Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo has confirmed that the city has received a report from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on allegations of financial misconduct and corruption.

The report deals with the Joburg Property Company and alleged financial misconduct during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier this week, various media reported that the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) had found that five senior employees of the Joburg Property Company (JPC), including its chief executive and chief financial officer, might be guilty of financial misconduct in the awarding of contracts to provide deep-cleaning and sanitisation services.
The city’s Mlimandlela Ndamase says the report has been referred to the MMC for Economic Development Lawrence Khoza.
“The report has adverse findings and we have directed the Board of JPC to provide us with a clear and concise approach to ensuring we discipline and charge those employees identified to have acted improperly.
“Several other investigations, including the city’s own internal audit of Covid-19 procurement and expenditure, are ongoing and as and when outcomes become available, these will be reviewed and actioned.”
