Makhubo: Joburg won't tolerate illegal occupation of housing units
Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo has sent a stern warning to syndicates selling housing units and land in the city to unsuspecting residents.
Makhubo handed over housing units in Fleurhof in Soweto on Wednesday morning.
He warned syndicated that their “time is up”.
"Those who made themselves developers and estate agents of properties they don't own or have the right to them; your time is up.
"And those political parties who think that lawlessness and anarchy is the way to go, your time is up.”
The warning by the mayor comes amid battles between evicted residents and the Red Ants in Fleurhof over the past few weeks.
On Tuesday, the city moved to evict another group of homeless people who occupied government housing units illegally.
The housing project is expected to consist of some 21 000 units when the project is completed.
However, some homeless residents in the area believe that they are the rightful beneficiaries of the Fleurhof housing project.
The mayor says housing units are going to the rightful beneficiaries, who have been on the waiting list since 1994.
"We won't tolerate anarchy, we won't tolerate lawlessness. All the units in Johannesburg are going to beneficiaries who are qualifying, especially the elderly who have been waiting since 1996 to 2000."
