Makhura set to meet with Mazibuko following 'combi courts' rant

Gauteng Premier David Makhura is set to meet with MEC for sport and recreation Faith Mazibuko amid an uproar over a leaked recording of her ranting at staff.

In the leaked recording Mazibuko is heard pressuring her staff to deliver sporting facilities ahead of the general elections in May.

She also threatened staff with dismissal should they not construct the sports facilities, referred to as combi courts, as soon as possible, ignoring legal and tender processes.

The ANC in Gauteng confirmed on Thursday that Makhura will be meeting with Mazibuko in his capacity as premier.

The party’s Tasneem Motara said: 'We would want to give the premier space to engage with her and come back to us as to what he believes should be the best option, whether we use the government structures such as the legislature, integrity committee or the ANC internal structures.

"But we would want to give space to the premier in his capacity as head of government in the province to be able to determine and come back to us with what should be the best way forward.”

Motara said public representative should be aware of what they say when speaking to employees.

"But be that as it may, there has to be mutual respect between senior and subordinates, between those who have to account to each other.

"Over and above even the racial comments, there should be mutual respects between staff and colleagues."

Mazibuko has since apologised for her actions.

“I humble myself and apologise to Premier Makhura and my colleagues in the provincial cabinet for the harm caused. I am willing to subject myself to whatever appropriate sanction to be imposed on me by Premier Makhura and my organisation, the ANC,” she said in a statement.
