Gauteng Premier David Makhura has vowed to keep additional police officers in Alexandra until the suspects who shot and killed five people are behind bars.

Makhura was speaking outside the local police station on Friday morning.

The premier visited the area alongside Police Minister Bheki Cele, National Commissioner Fannie Masemola and Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko following Thursday evening’s violence.

Five people were killed in separate shooting incidents, while five others are recovering in hospital.

Makhura said one positive development is the residents feeding information on the suspects to the police.

"We will not leave Alex until the suspects are arrested. We need additional resources, we have been speaking with the Minister of Police Bheki Cele and the national commissioner. They have made a commitment that today they will give us additional resources for policing in the whole of Gauteng.

“The people of Alex have been collaborating with the police, they have passed over information. That's why I am saying we will not leave here today until the suspects are arrested.

“The police have enough information, they are hot on the heels. This is a localised gang that has moved from one section to the other, they have been terrorising this community. They will behind bars before we leave here.”

Makhura said the lack of crime-fighting resources in the province is no secret.

"We need the re-enforcement of policing in our province and not just where there have been problems, but also in other communities.

We will be in different areas of our province through Okae Molao operations, but without sufficient policing resources.

“The police numbers we have are often too few. The police and national commissioner are going to give us a report on how many additional resources we will be getting,” Makhura added.
