Mamabolo says time’s up for non-performing contractors

Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mabololo says the provincial government has begun terminating the contracts of several non-performing service providers.
Mamabolo said the termination is part of the province’s move to rid the government of contractors who are awarded government tenders but fail to finish the job.
The department is responsible for the construction of government projects, including schools and hospitals in the province.
Last month, Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson announced that 40 contractors had been blacklisted from doing business with the department and its entities.
Mamabolo briefed the media in Johannesburg on Thursday.
"Since the 1st of August, we have issued termination letters to certain service providers,” he said.
"These are companies that are non-compliant. When they do work for the private sector, they do it to the best, but when they do the same engineering work for the government, they drag their feet.
"They do shoddy work, they give us incompetent, unqualified people. We just can't tolerate companies that don't take us as serious,” he added.
The department has also established a governance lab to ensure that service providers, contractors and professional teams adhere to their contractual, financial and performance obligations.
"The governance lab works in synergy with project managers to strengthen compliance, accelerate problem resolution and institutionalise consequence management,” Mamabolo said.
