The 30-year-old suspect was arrested at 10am on the corner of Troye and Kerk streets, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said in a statement.

Police on routine crime prevention duties saw two suspicious men, and stopped them to search them. One of them managed to run away but the second one was cornered.

Police searched him and recovered a police firearm Z88 and 12 live rounds of ammunition. The firearm’s visible serial number had been filled off, but there was another serial number in the firearm which would assist police in their investigation. The suspect would appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, Mbele said.

Johannesburg central police have now arrested three men for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition on Saturday and Sunday, two of them believed to be security guards.
