Graaff Reinett SA Police Service members have arrested a 33-year-old man and recovered abalone worth more than R2.1 million, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.
“Members received information about the man en route to Johannesburg,” spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said in a statement.
The vehicle was stopped at about 4pm on Wednesday and searched. “Fifty boxes containing 985kg of dried abalone were discovered. The abalone was found hidden within the straw bales at the back of the truck.”
The abalone and the truck were confiscated. The suspect would appear in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession of abalone, Mills said. - ANA
