Man critically injured in police shootout

A bystander was shot in the head by a stray bullet during a shootout between police and suspects at the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein on Monday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says the man - believed to be in his 20s - was found lying on the side of the road.

 

"Assessments showed that the man had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was in a critical condition.

"The man was treated for his injuries and provided with several advanced life support interventions before he was transported by another service to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for further care."

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela says the shootout started when police spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle.


When they tried to pull it to the side the car sped off.


"They gave chase in the bridge of Mandela in Braamfontein started shooting at the police. Police returned fire and one suspect was shot at.

"It was found out later that there was a person who was standing by who was shot.”


Makhubela says four suspects were arrested, three unlicensed firearms were recovered.


"It was later discovered that the vehicle that was used was taken in a business robbery in North West last month. So far we are continuing with investigations."
