The man accused of killing the 23-year-old Fort Hare law student Nosicelo Mtebeni has chosen not to apply for bail.
Alutha Pasile (25) is accused of brutally killing his girlfriend and fellow student at Fort Hare University’s East London campus.
He briefly appeared in the East London Magistrates Court on Monday morning after he was arrested last week.
Her dismembered body was discovered in a suitcase and two black bags in East London.
Pasile faces a charge of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
Speaking to the SABC outside court, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in the Eastern Cape Anelisa Ngcakani said they believe the state has a strong case.
“We do have a strong case, of course it has been postponed for further investigation, but we do have a strong evidence and we are confident of our case. In his confession he goes into detail about what happened, he says that the victim allegedly cheated, and argues she was behaving strangely.
“He claims that she was secretive about his cell phone, he says that he managed to get through the cell phone and saw pictures, messages of the other alleged lover.
“We also have witnesses, one witness alleges that he saw him with the suitcase,” said Ngcakani
He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear again in September 28.
